In the United States, two months after the operation, 57-year-old David Bennet, the world's first person to whom the heart of a genetically modified pig was transplanted, died. The exact cause of death has not yet been named: either the patient was too weak, or the organ did not take root after transplantation, writes Independent. Physicians who observed Bennett said they did not notice signs of overt immune rejection. But at the same time, the patient suffered from a fatal cardiovascular disease - it was because of him that he was denied a donor human organ. ♥️ Before the operation, which took place on January 7, Bennett was on life support for six weeks. After the transplant, he was able to stay with his family and watch the final game of the National League of American football.
David passed away on March 8th. He was aware of the risks of an experimental pig heart transplant. “He showed himself to be a brave and noble patient, he fought to the very end,” said surgeon Bartley Griffith.
